Boys Soccer Defeats Vermont Academy for First Championship Title
By Grace Owen ‘26
For the first time ever with a team full of talented players aided by hard-working coaches, the Boys Varsity Soccer team won the NEPSAC tournament on November 20, at FC Stars Complex in Lancaster, MA.
“The thing that had the most impact was the goalies,” Coach Chris Mira said, talking about the important win. As the game went into overtime, the pressure was on the goalies to block as many shots as they could, and they did not disappoint.
“Everyone was holding their breath, and then I must have jumped four feet in the air,” Mira said while recounting his initial reaction to the win.
“I went over to hug him [Coach Mira] and I couldn’t see him anywhere, and then I saw he was out on the field celebrating with the kids,” Assistant Coach Emilio Zarco said.
The win seems like it was taken straight out of an underdog story. “Last year we lost in the semi finals to the same team [Vermont Academy] we beat on penalty kicks in the final” Mira said. “From the beginning to the end, we knew that we wanted to get there, but we weren’t sure we would be able to.” The team has exceeded expectations over and over again this season, winning games that seemed unwinnable and staying determined to grow to even higher levels even as the victories added up and it would be easy to become complacent with their current skill set.
With a 11-7-2 record, Boys Varsity Soccer had a remarkable season, and we can only hope that this continues for the 2023 season! Go Dragons!
